According to Montana law, the Sheriff shall perform the duties of humane officer with reference to the protection of animals in the county.  All incidents of neglect or animal abuse are to be reported to the Office of the Sheriff.  However, complaints of nuisance animals within the incorporated towns of Choteau, Fairfield, and Dutton are the responsibility of the respective towns. 

Livestock Permits and Brand Inspections

For information regarding the livestock laws of Montana you may access the Montana Department of Livestock website at www.liv.mt.gov for information on obtaining or renewing a brand or for information on any of the laws surrounding the livestock industry. 

The District Inspector can issue “lifetime inspections, “change of ownership” or permits for “change of pasture” and “hide inspections.  The District Inspector may be contacted at the number below or at the State Brand Office at 406-453-6051.

Deputy Brand Inspectors may issue the same inspections and permits with the exception of the “lifetime inspection”.
